Overview

Next Steps in Research will be delivered over two sessions. Attendance at both is required to complete the training.

  • 22 October 2024, 9.30am to 4pm

This course will provide a foundation of knowledge to enable you to develop your practice in clinical research no matter what aspect of research you are currently working in. It offers the opportunity to gain an understanding of the management and running of clinical studies. You will be able to apply relevant knowledge and skills gained from the course to your working environment, and you will be able to build on your experience in the clinical research arena for improved collaborative working.

The sessions will be delivered using a variety of teaching strategies including lectures, group-work and student-led discussions. You must attend both days to complete the course and receive your certificate. Topics covered will include:

  • the basics of clinical research methodology
  • history of research
  • participant advocacy and 'compassion in practice'
  • protocol review (prior to site agreement to open a study)
  • patient information and informed consent for the CRN
  • recruitment and retention of participants into clinical research
  • roles and responsibilities of the research team
  • study management and documentation
  • monitoring, audits and MHRA inspections
  • drug and medical device development
  • patient and public involvement
  • the national and international picture
