A Consultant Rheumatologist wants to use his new role to engage trainees and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) across south London in Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSK) research.

Chris Wincup, who works at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, has been appointed as the NIHR CRN South London's new co-Research Specialty Lead for Musculoskeletal Disorders.

The Consultant Rheumatologist wants to use his new role to champion MSK research across south London in 2023. He said:

"Musculoskeletal conditions cause a significant impact on people's daily lives. They affect people's ability to work, socialise and function. Many diseases we treat in this specialty are rare but hugely debilitating and poorly understood. The problem with many rheumatic conditions is that they are invisible, and these illnesses may not appear obvious. More research must be done in MSK to improve people's overall quality of life.

"Research must be open to all, regardless of job role or seniority. It is an exciting time to be involved in MSK research, especially as so many new targeted treatments and therapies are coming through and improving patients' lives! I am keen to engage with trainees and AHPs as part of my role.

"The NIHR CRN South London plays a vital role in enabling excellent collaboration across several sites so we can conduct research into these diseases. I have a real passion for research! I think it is one of the main reasons why I decided to become a rheumatologist."

Research specialty leads play a vital role in encouraging clinicians and other healthcare professionals to participate in the delivery of health and care research across 30 medical specialties. Find out more about support for MSK research on the NIHR's website.
