A valued member of the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) Greater Manchester team has been recognised for her leadership at a national awards ceremony.

Caroline Winckley, a Senior Clinical Research Practitioner in CRN Greater Manchester Delivery Team, was a finalist in The Advancing Healthcare Awards 2023.

She was part of a three-person shortlist selected for the Academy for Healthcare Science Award for Clinical Research Practitioner Leadership. The ceremony took place in London on 21 April 2023.

Caroline made the shortlist in recognition of her work in leading on the Genes and Health genetics study which involves recruiting people of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage and inviting them to provide a saliva sample and complete a health questionnaire.

Data gathered from this major, ongoing study has already contributed to identifying better treatments and improved health outcomes in these communities.

Given that these communities have been traditionally underrepresented in research, the success of the engagement strategies carried out by Caroline and her colleagues has been a significant achievement.

The team had recruited over 580 participants at the time Caroline was shortlisted and that number has now risen to 1,000 and counting.

Jo Henry, Matron of the CRN Greater Manchester Delivery Team, said:

“Caroline takes accountability very seriously and ensures she knows exactly what is required of her for each study and visit, and organises others in the team accordingly. She leads by example, she has unwavering enthusiasm and passion for research and because of this she motivates those around her.”

Caroline Winckley, a Senior Clinical Research Practitioner in CRN Greater Manchester Delivery Team, said:

"I feel honoured to have been selected as a finalist for this award and be able to attend the awards ceremony with colleagues to represent the NIHR CRN Greater Manchester and the Clinical Research Practitioner profession.

“Our achievements for the study would not have been possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of the team. Thank you to everyone for your hard work in supporting the study and for all of the encouragement with this award.”
