A senior researcher has praised an NIHR CRN South London Clinical Research Practitioner (CRP) for going above and beyond to support her study.

Shelley Campbell is working on the NIHR-supported FIRST study at St Thomas’ Hospital. The FIRST study compares three different types of hand splints used after finger flexor surgery to protect the repair and promote optimal recovery of function.

Shelley helps recruit research volunteers to the FIRST study, supports people taking part in the research, keeps study records up to date and ensures all processes are followed correctly. Principal Investigator Lisa Newington, an Advanced Clinical Practice Hand Therapist, said:

“Without Shelley’s support, it would be impossible for us to successfully and consistently recruit to the FIRST study. We appreciate her time and effort – she goes above and beyond, and we are extremely grateful.

“Shelley has a positive research presence in the department, which has normalised research involvement. She discusses the study and processes with patients and other team members clearly and brings her wealth of research experience to the fore.

“My message to Shelley is simply thank you!”

The NIHR Clinical Research Network South London helps increase the opportunities for people to take part in health and care research. Shelley said:

“I’d like to thank Lisa for her kind words. I enjoy working in the Hand Therapy Clinic, where the study is integrated into the department and routine care. The hand therapists are very supportive of the study, despite being very busy, having large caseloads, and the study processes taking extra time to complete in a very time-pressured clinic.”
