A prominent south London professor has been featured on a daytime BBC One programme where she spoke about NIHR-supported research into Chronic Liver Disease (CLD).

Professor of Hepatology and Chronic Liver Failure Debbie Shawcross from King’s College London was featured on Dr Xand’s Con or Cure series. The programme aims to separate fact from fiction regarding medical and health-related treatments and give the audience sound help and advice to avoid being scammed.

Professor Shawcross spoke about using faecal microbiota transplantation to treat CLD and highlighted the work of the NIHR-supported PROFIT and PROMISE trials in advancing the treatment of CLD. The research is led by King’s College London and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

According to the Promise trial website, the advanced stages of CLD, known as cirrhosis, which causes hardening and scarring of the liver, is the third biggest cause of death and loss of working years behind heart disease and self-harm.

You can watch episode nine of the series on the BBC iPlayer.
