Working in primary care research: the South Asia Biobank study

Researchers are recruiting people to take part in a study which aims to identify why there is a high rate of conditions including heart disease and diabetes in people of South Asian heritage living in the UK. 

Clinical Research Practitioner at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Aneela Majid explains what is involved in the South Asia Biobank study, also known as the LOLIPOP 100K study, and what motivates her to work in research.

What is this research study about?

This is a study for South Asians as they have a high risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other critical illnesses compared to other ethnicities. Participation in the study helps us to understand why this is the case and we hope the results will transform research and improve the health of millions of South Asians worldwide.

What does taking part involve?

We invite both men and women of South Asian heritage aged 18 - 85 to take part in the study and receive a personal health report.  Participants receive a body composition test which measures the percentage of fat, bone and muscle in the body. We also check the participant’s blood pressure and take a blood sample to check for high cholesterol and diabetes.  Participants also receive a fundoscopy, which is an examination of the eye, to identify any risks for vision loss and have an ECG to detect issues with the heart.  

What motivates you to work in research?

I love getting to know the participants and speaking to them in Punjabi and Urdu. Through educating people about healthy living, I know that I am making a difference in the lives of others. This study is a new challenge for us and we learn from each participant.

What would you say to people about considering whether to take part in research?

Taking part in a health research study can be a life-changing experience. For our participants, identifying small lifestyle changes can make a big difference in their overall health.
