Maame – detailed transcript

00:00:00

Upbeat music begins

00:00:00:14 - 00:00:01:07

Hi, everyone.

00:00:01:07 - 00:00:01:19

Today I'm

00:00:01:19 - 00:00:02:16

diving into a career

00:00:02:16 - 00:00:04:01

that's often misunderstood,

00:00:04:01 - 00:00:06:08

which is research in health and care.

00:00:06:08 - 00:00:06:17

Today, I'm

00:00:06:17 - 00:00:07:13

going to try and find some

00:00:07:13 - 00:00:08:14

amazing professionals.

00:00:08:14 - 00:00:09:21

Talk about what it really means

Exploring research careers

00:00:09:21 - 00:00:11:13

to work in research.

00:00:11:17 - 00:00:14:13

Let's see if anyone's in here.

00:00:15:19 - 00:00:16:19

Hi, Maame.

00:00:16:19 - 00:00:18:04

Sorry to interrupt your lunch,

00:00:18:04 - 00:00:18:19

Do you have a few minutes

00:00:18:19 - 00:00:19:22

to be in our video today?

00:00:19:22 - 00:00:22:05

We're talking about research careers.

00:00:22:05 - 00:00:22:15

Sure.

00:00:22:15 - 00:00:24:20

I was just finishing up.

00:00:24:20 - 00:00:25:06

Maame,

00:00:25:06 - 00:00:25:19

You've been

00:00:25:19 - 00:00:27:03

a Clinical Research Practitioner

00:00:27:03 - 00:00:28:04

for a while now.

00:00:28:06 - 00:00:31:19

Can you tell us a bit about your journey and how you got into research?

[Text on screen]

Can you tell us a bit about your journey and how you got into research?

00:00:32:00 - 00:00:33:10

Of course.

00:00:33:10 - 00:00:34:08

I qualified as an

00:00:34:08 - 00:00:35:21

Operating Department Practitioner (ODP)

00:00:35:21 - 00:00:37:18

in 2015 and started off

00:00:37:18 - 00:00:39:17

as an Anaesthetic ODP.

00:00:39:17 - 00:00:42:00

I wasn't initially drawn to research,

00:00:42:00 - 00:00:45:00

I thought it was all paperwork and admin,

00:00:45:00 - 00:00:46:03

but in 2018,

00:00:46:03 - 00:00:47:18

I took a secondment in research

00:00:47:18 - 00:00:49:14

and I was pleasantly surprised with

00:00:49:14 - 00:00:51:02

how hands on it was.

00:00:51:02 - 00:00:52:03

I've never looked back -

00:00:52:03 - 00:00:53:12

and then I was offered

00:00:53:12 - 00:00:54:15

a permanent contract

00:00:54:15 - 00:00:56:15

as a Clinical Research Practitioner.

00:00:56:15 - 00:00:58:03

So I get to use both my skills

00:00:58:03 - 00:01:00:16

as an ODP in a research setting.

00:01:00:16 - 00:01:04:23

So, what are your main responsibilities as an ODP working in research?

[Text on screen]

What are your main responsibilities as an ODP working in research?

00:01:05:06 - 00:01:07:20

My role is still very patient focused.

00:01:07:20 - 00:01:10:06

I meet patients before, during,

00:01:10:06 - 00:01:11:12

and after surgery,

00:01:11:12 - 00:01:12:21

and follow them up

00:01:12:21 - 00:01:14:00

throughout their recovery.

00:01:14:00 - 00:01:16:02

Sometimes for up to a year.

00:01:16:02 - 00:01:16:23

I do everything

00:01:16:23 - 00:01:19:08

from recruiting patients into studies,

00:01:19:08 - 00:01:20:15

getting their consent,

00:01:20:15 - 00:01:22:00

taking their observations,

00:01:22:00 - 00:01:24:00

and collecting data.

00:01:24:00 - 00:01:24:23

That's amazing.

00:01:25:01 - 00:01:28:13

Can you give us an example of the kind of research studies you’re involved in?

[Text on screen]

Can you give us an example of the kind of research studies you’re involved in?

00:01:28:16 - 00:01:30:05

Sure.

00:01:30:05 - 00:01:32:00

One study I'm working on compares

00:01:32:00 - 00:01:34:05

methods of administering anaesthesia

00:01:34:05 - 00:01:35:10

to see which gives patients

00:01:35:10 - 00:01:36:23

a better recovery.

00:01:36:23 - 00:01:37:12

I also

00:01:37:12 - 00:01:38:04

work on studies

00:01:38:04 - 00:01:39:20

that look at post-surgery recovery

00:01:39:20 - 00:01:41:06

for cardiac patients

00:01:41:06 - 00:01:43:03

and how pain levels compare before

00:01:43:03 - 00:01:44:16

and after surgery.

00:01:44:16 - 00:01:45:10

All these studies

00:01:45:10 - 00:01:47:10

focus on improving patient outcomes.

00:01:47:10 - 00:01:48:13

It's really rewarding.

00:01:48:19 - 00:01:49:17

That sounds like you still have

00:01:49:17 - 00:01:51:11

a lot of patient interaction.

00:01:51:13 – 00:01:53:16

Did having a lot of patient interaction surprise you about research?

[Text on screen]

Did having a lot of patient interaction surprise you about research?

00:01:54:00 - 00:01:55:22

Definitely.

00:01:55:22 - 00:01:56:21

In my previous role,

00:01:56:21 - 00:01:59:07

I'd only see patients during surgery,

00:01:59:07 - 00:02:01:08

and then I wouldn't see them again.

00:02:01:08 - 00:02:03:00

Now I get to build these longer term

00:02:03:00 - 00:02:04:10

relationships with them,

00:02:04:10 - 00:02:06:05

which is really rewarding.

00:02:06:05 - 00:02:07:18

Research isn't just about sitting

00:02:07:18 - 00:02:08:11

at a desk -

00:02:08:11 - 00:02:09:08

it's about improving

00:02:09:08 - 00:02:10:15

patient care and outcomes

00:02:10:15 - 00:02:11:21

in real time.

00:02:11:21 - 00:02:15:01

And how would you say your work life balance is?

[Text on screen]

How would you say your work life balance is?

00:02:15:10 - 00:02:17:00

That’s a huge plus.

00:02:17:00 - 00:02:18:20

I only work four days a week,

00:02:18:20 - 00:02:21:13

8am to 6 pm, with no weekends.

00:02:21:13 - 00:02:22:10

It gives me the chance

00:02:22:10 - 00:02:23:18

to pick up bank shifts,

00:02:23:18 - 00:02:25:16

which I only do about once a month though.

00:02:26:12 - 00:02:27:15

I love my work hours.

00:02:27:15 - 00:02:28:19

It's allowed me to focus

00:02:28:19 - 00:02:30:10

on my personal life and further

00:02:30:10 - 00:02:32:14

my studies without feeling overwhelmed.

00:02:32:14 - 00:02:33:17

That’s great.

00:02:33:17 - 00:02:34:17

You mentioned that you’re

00:02:34:17 - 00:02:36:03

furthering your studies

00:02:36:02 - 00:02:38:15

Have you found any opportunities for career progression?

[Text on screen]

Have you found any opportunities for career progression?

00:02:39:02 - 00:02:40:14

Absolutely.

00:02:40:14 - 00:02:41:08

Right now

00:02:41:08 - 00:02:42:21

I've just completed my Master's

00:02:42:21 - 00:02:43:15

in Public Health,

00:02:43:15 - 00:02:45:03

which I'll be graduating from later

00:02:45:03 - 00:02:46:06

this year.

00:02:46:06 - 00:02:48:00

Research has given me the flexibility

00:02:48:00 - 00:02:49:10

to further my education,

00:02:49:10 - 00:02:51:07

and is opening doors for me.

00:02:51:07 - 00:02:53:07

There’s so much room for career progression,

00:02:53:07 - 00:02:55:00

whether it's through specialised roles

00:02:55:00 - 00:02:56:06

or even leadership positions

00:02:56:06 - 00:02:57:14

within the research teams.

00:02:58:11 - 00:02:59:19

Thanks so much, Maame.

00:02:59:19 - 00:03:00:19

It sounds like research is

00:03:00:19 - 00:03:02:00

Where the future is.

00:03:02:00 - 00:03:03:06

Definitely.

00:03:03:06 - 00:03:04:00

Let's keep pushing

00:03:04:00 - 00:03:05:02

health and care forward.

00:03:05:05 – 00:03:12:17
